Tucked right down in the heel of Italy, Puglia is not like anywhere else in Italy. Agricultural by tradition,
it produces the majority of Italian wheat and olives, as well as wine, fruit and vegetables. The local people are incredibly
friendly and open, and are very welcoming towards the British.
Property in Puglia
Property in Puglia is still less expensive than in other areas of Italy, but has increased considerably over
the last five years. There are deals to be had, but it is important to have good local knowledge to ensure that you don’t
get charged too much.
There is a wide variety of property available; modern apartments, ancient buildings in the historic
centre, villas by the sea or houses in the country. The most famous style of local architecture is the trullo, a dry stone
building with conical roofs. Regular shaped stone buildings, called lamia (plural lamie), may have interesting vaulted
ceilings. Slightly grander country houses are called casale or casolare, and the biggest old farm “manor” houses
are called masseria.
Buying a home
Purchasing a house in the Puglian countryside can seem an idyllic thing to do. And certainly, the way of life
and beautiful environment are good for the soul. But to ensure peace of mind you need the advice of someone with experience
to realise the challenges of what you are buying in to. For years, the local people will have kept a house in the country
that was little more than a base from which to work the land. It is not uncommon to find properties with no electricity, water,
phone line or even a road. Many houses have only been lived in for a couple of months in the summer. We can help you understand
the challenges that your dream property has in store for you, the kind of budget that you need to add the facilities you will
need, and enable you to plan accordingly.
The purchasing process itself can also be a little bewildering, especially if
you do not yet speak good Italian. We can facilitate this for you; explain what is needed; introduce you to the people that
you need to know and guide you through the maze of bureaucracy.
